Artivism is the intersection of art and activism. In our ever-changing landscape of art and performing, diverse communities of artists imbue their work with nuanced experiences, stories, or offering perspectives to change an audience for the better. I am a former student of the late Morgan Jenness (American dramaturg and actor); with an undying fervor, they taught their colleagues that the theater is a place to see and to be seen. Further, I have studied with the likes of Keelay Gipson. Gipson, a working artivist ferociously penning unique stories, layered with characters we can all connect to, desires their audiences to not lend a blind eye to the work Black artists have so passionately fought for. One of Gipson's most recent plays, "pumpernickel." is dedicated to uncovering the complexities of artivism.
Artivism is necessary in today's social climate. With more and more intricate and valuable American history being erased, now is the time to make our voices heard. Now is the time to make our audiences listen and learn. Now is the time to fight for our stories to be told. Demand action, inspire change.
